HF Communications Vital in Algeria Humanitarian Effort.
March 14, 2012 – Barrett Communications have supplied high frequency (HF) radio communication systems and antenna’s to the Algerian Ambulance Service in Tinalkom, for vital humanitarian communications with the regional city of Illizi City.
As a result of ongoing political issues in Libya, neighboring Algeria has strongly participated in humanitarian aid operations and hosted thousands of refugees along the land borders between the two countries. The site named Tinalkom is located 500 km from its closest city of Illizi City and 2000 km from the capital of Algiers. Tinalkom is providing medical aid, provision of food and temporary accommodation for these refugees. Barrett Communications supplied Barrett 2050 HF radio communication systems, configured for base station and mobile vehicle use.
The introduction of this communication system has allowed aid workers daily communication with essential services in Illizi City. Zouhir Belbaki, an official with Algeria’s Ambulance Service commented “we can now give daily refugees status updates and updates for supplies, medical doctors and fire fighting requirements for the site…HF radio communications is the most reliable and cost effective option for us, we have no telephone network, wired or GSM, and the satellite telephone stations are very expensive for the long duration of intervention”. The Barrett 2050 is a versatile and rugged field proven HF transceiver that can be easily configured to operate as a mobile manpack, mobile vehicle or base station configuration. It is designed for ease of use to enable operators to easily install and operate with minimal training.
The 2050 is housed in a lightweight, extremely strong sealed aluminum chassis, and meets MIL- STD 810G for drop, dust, temperature, shock and vibration. Barrett Communications radio solutions have been used by international humanitarian organisations for the past decade as they provide reliable communication with no ongoing call costs.
